This week was crazy weird with all the time off- not that I'm complaining! It was definitely needed. It just snuck up on me. . kind of like the workout week, too. I wish I would've planned it better. I'm sure forgetting my gym card on Tuesday didn't help matters (they won't let you in if you do it more than once. . . seriously. rude.) If I was smarter, I would've run on Wednesday and rested on Thursday so I could've moved my back to back runs to Friday/Saturday and had today to rest. C'es la vie. Live and learn.
For the record, 2 back to back 5 mile races might equal 10 miles but it's definitely NOT an 8 mile mental boost. 9.5 was pretty daunting considering the longest straight distance I've done previously was a 10k. Yikes! To top it off, we're having another heatwave. So, yea, those miles weren't pretty. They were slow and sweaty and mentally painful (physically good- a few minor aches but all stretching related I'm sure) but at the end of it, I think I finally feel like I'm a runner again. After mile 6, I felt like I could really let my mind go and it's been awhile since I've done that on a long run. It was definitely missed. I was even looking forward to the ice bath around mile 8!
I was a little weary about the Galloway plan taking me up to 14 before the race, but now I'm really liking it. It's really boosting my confidence (when I do it correctly ;) I also really like the up and down week process instead of the beginner ones that only progress. It's really nice to know next week I can chill a little, since it goes back down. I also like that once Dumbo is over, I can chill a week and then jump right back into a 15 or 16 to further prepare for NYCM.
Did your workouts change because of the holiday?
Awesome job on the back to back runs. Those scare me!
ReplyDeleteI have yet to do the 14 miles before a race, but doing at least 13 really helps me mentally. I have a hard time pushing past that on a training run though.
Thanks, Summer! They are scary, but as long as you don't go too crazy the first day, the second isn't terrible.
DeleteI agree about the mental aspect!
I like the up and down training progression, as well. It not only gives your body a break, but your mind a break, too. Great job, Abby! I'm getting so excited for Dumbo. We're going to have so much fun!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Jaime. It helps me mentally give it more than I would if I was always progressing. I'm getting excited, too! Can't wait to see yall!
DeleteI have never done more than 13 in a training cycle for a half, but I think it's a great idea. Come race day 13 will feel a little easier. I'm ramping up my mileage now for my marathon in October though, so I'll be getting in some 16 and 18s before my next half at the end of August. So I'm hopeful that half will fee like a breeze.
ReplyDeleteGreat runs this week! keep it up!
Thanks, Michael!
DeleteI haven't either, so we will see. Good luck with your long runs in August. I love the feeling when halfs become a short run, haha!
I am constantly changing my workouts to work with holidays etc. I didn't actually check out the Galloway plan for Dumbo but I remember the Goofy plan went up and down too. Glad to hear it's working well for you!
ReplyDeleteYou should check it out if you need a plan. I like it so far!
DeleteSo apparently I'm on a hiatus from training but look at you go!! I need to actually catch back up to the Galloway plan. Yay for feeling like a runner again!!
ReplyDeleteI think you have a good enough excuse from training ;) Hope all is going well with the move!
DeleteSounds like you will be miled up for the race! Should be fun :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope so! Hope your training is going well. Can't wait to see you!
