Date night: Quidam!

Last week, NYC was graced with another Cirque du Soliel show, Quidam. Being the cirque fans we are, as soon as I heard about it, I got us tickets.

When I saw that the show description was about a child's escape into imagination, I interpreted that as a light and fun show for a Sunday Date. Clearly, I missed the key word being escape and that should have been good enough foreshadowing for the show. Cirque concepts can be abstract and this one definitely got away from me. Before B explained to me what was going on at intermission, it felt extremely depressive; not the light entertainment I pictured. Once she told me what was going on, it made sense, but it was not what I was expecting.

My misinterpretation of the concept does not cross over to the performances. Those were as always as stunning and beautiful as ever. The interaction of the stage and performers was again impressive in it's own way. Sadly, there was a huge gap between the stage and the seats, which made it feel less intimate than previous Cirque shows I've seen. I am also bias to the tours that are in cirque tents as apposed to the ones in theaters, though.

I can say I do have a new found respect for the silk performers after attempting areal yoga. I always knew it required a ton of skills, but I don't think you fully gasp how much, until you actually try something like it. Many stories in the air for a 10 minute routine? I could barely handle a few moments before I was motion sick for over 2 hours. Kudos to yall!

It was also our first time at the new Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. Personally, I'm a total fan of their popcorn selection. Not as amazing as gourmet, but it was still exciting to experience! The food selections were kind of awesome. I was honestly shocked when I saw caesar salad was on one menu. If only more arenas had selections like this! I was also impressed with the way they used the architecture as advertisement. The only thing I wished for was more of a food selection closer to the arena. There is a ton of shopping but not so much food. This also might be me being bias.

The verdict? Although, it was beautiful and a cirque show- how could you go wrong?- it wasn't my favorite but I'm definitely glad I saw it.

Have you ever misinterpreted what a show was supposed to be about?

  2. That's the show I saw at the New Orleans Arena with my parents several months ago. I really liked it, but it is dark for a story about a kid's dreams and imagination. And Crique shows do not carry over as well in arenas. They need to stick to tents and theatres that were specifically designed for the show. However, I am jealous you saw Barclay's. Supposed to be super cool.

    1. I agree- it was dark and I really love the tent atmosphere. When you come up next, we should see what's happening there. Barclay's is pretty awesome.

  3. Haha, Cirque shows always lose me with their vague and confusing story lines! I actually don't even think I realized there was a storyline the first couple I saw!

    1. I didn't either, but once I did, I like to see how it plays out. Totem was my favorite.

  4. We've always wanted to see a Cirque show. They played one at the movies a while back, but we didn't go - it seemed like it would lose something on the big screen.

    1. We rented it and you're right, it totally loses something on screen.

  5. I don't even attempt to interpret Cirque shows. I love them, but they're always wacky. If you're ever in Vegas, you might like Love. It was amazing and I don't think any of the seats are bad.
