Capering for a great medal

(source)
So, runDisney revealed the 20th Anniversary medal.

I'm super torn. Originally, I said I wouldn't even consider it until I got close to my 18 miler. That won't be until October and the race gets more full as they days go on. At this point, I don't even know if I'm going to finish my first full, let alone a 2nd one a couple of months later?! Oye. Then, runDisney pulled this marketing medal reveal I'm assuming for a push to sell the race out. That's when I made a deal with myself. If the medal is a-mazing, then I can sign up.
The more I look at it, the prettier it gets, but it was not love at first sight. I was not jumping to register (even though with the reveal they are having a flash sale back to the original price. hey. $20 is $20). I was disappointed. Honestly, I saw a leaked version of it and I prayed it was a decoy; it wasn't. It just didn't have the grandiose appeal that the "Great Medal Caper" campaign portrayed. I was hoping for another Donald. To be honest, all of the branding for the campaign was leaning that way with it's look and feel. When the medal didn't follow that particular aesthetic, as a designer I'm trained to reject it. Or maybe I just made all that up because I really wanted it to.

Anyway, it's grows on me. I guess it's better than the "running Mickey" (side rant: why must runners have the worst taste ever! Get with the times, people!). After I looked up the 15th anniversary- I realized I was waiting for something like that, but with a spinner- maybe the awesome 20th logo? I'm fully convinced David Brotherton designed the medal I was waiting for, it was just killed by the client (which is usually the case with good design. So sad.) But hey! At least it doesn't have the Disney font (Seriously people. Knock it off. Spoiler alert: That's not even Walt's handwriting.)

Things for consideration (clearly, I'm using my blog as yet another way to talk this out. Like I haven't ad nauseum to anyone and everyone who has come in contact with me in the last week):

- I'm already going to be trained. NYCM is in November, so all I'd really need to do is keep up my base and I'll be golden. Let's be honest, I'm a slow runner. Marathons don't make sense for me. Not only does their training consist of a 2nd full time job, the actual event is going to take me a good 6-7 hours. That's a chunk of time, people. Am I really going to be willing to do this again?
- It is the only other marathon I'd want to do at least once in my life, so why not during the special 20th? Who knows where I'll be in 5 years (if I do it, it will have to be for an anniversary year)? I pretty much already know Goofy isn't in the cards for me either, so it's cool. Even though it's a marathon weekend, doesn't mean it has to be a marathon weekend. It's ok just to run one race and enjoy myself the rest of the time, instead of trying to save my legs or being in pain. But if I can get it out of the way, I never have to worry about regretting it.

- Pretty much every runner I know (IRL or not) will be there and I know I will feel left out if I don't go. Just think of all the fun that would be! What an awesome blogger meetup.

- Plus. I have the perfect costume. If I tell you, don't steal my awesome idea, ok? It's The Mad Hatter.
Because I have clearly gone mad. Perfect, right?

FINE.

I already registered :-)

Who do I get to meet there?!

  2. LOVE your costume!!

I haven't gotten that far. I think I'm still trying to finalize the 3 costumes I have for Tower of Terror week first. But then I might at least have Man Friend and I be matchy-matchy if we aren't going a legit costume type thing. BUT Halloween season will be in full effect when I get home from Disney, so I might be able to hit the costume shop and create something fun for Goofy weekend!

I held of any opinion of the leaked photo, too. It wasn't what I wanted. But then seeing the video and seeing the real medal and not a drawing, it grew on me. I like the classic feel of it. And I like the the Donald medal isn't the OLD Donald medal, and instead a variation of last year's that I loved so much.

    1. Honestly, that idea came from trying to figure out my costume for Tower! But I decided it would work better for the full marathon and stick with villains for this.

Thanks for reminding me I need to go to Party City soon.

I think you and MF should do the tweedledee/ tweedledum theme! Is he doing Goofy too?

I knew Donald was going to be like last year's I just wish it wasn't round. But I'm glad it's not amazing either bc then I would've been tempted to do Goofy and I know I can't.

  3. What an awesome costume idea!! I won't steal it, promise! :) So I saw the medal and was seriously tempted to sign up for the marathon. I'm a sucker for spinner medals! But its not in the cards for me. This reminds me of talking myself into doing both the Tinker Bell & Princess last year. But yay for you!!

    1. Thank you! I'm so excited, I hate that I have to wait so long to wear it.

Will you be doing a runDisney next year?

    2. I hope so!! Princess for sure, most likely Disneyland Half (because now I'm addicted to coast to coast medals) and maybe Tower of Terror. We'll see...

    3. YaY!! I plan on those as well! I have to get coast to coast. Were you able to defer TOT?

  4. I'll be there, I'll be there! I have to admit, the medal wasn't quite what I expected either. In a way, I kind of wish it was all gold so that it matched the Donald and Goofy medals. But, I'm like you and it's growing on me for sure.

    1. YAY! Will you be rocking Goofy?! That's awesome! I tried to convince myself I could do it but I can't. I will cheer you all on!

I wanted at least one of my full marathon medals to be awesome. Oh well.

  5. Well as you already know, Goofy is in the cards for me again this year. $370 later and much hemming and hawing, I'm signed up. Thank you for encouraging it. You telling me that you signed up put it over the top.

I actually really like the medal. Its similar to the 5th Anniversary Goofy I earned a couple years ago, but I wish the "20" had more dominance. I like the classic feel a lot. I may wear Mickey instead of my Goofy in the parks the day after.

    1. You can thank B for that. That's essentially the same reasoning she gave/ gives me when I can't decide on registering.

No way! Even though, I do think this Mickey is cuter than goofy I like the white ribbon on the goofy this year. Looks really clean and classic to me for some reason.

  6. Yay! I am glad you registered! I am not so thrilled with the medal either, but I am doing the Goofy Challenge this year, so I figure at least one of the medals will have to please me, right? Anyhoo, I will look for the Mad Hatter on the course!

    1. Awesome, Rachel! Congrats! So many people I know are doing Goofy. . Im going to try to get out there early, so I can cheer yall on! Hope to see you there!

    2. I will be there! NYCM is my first full. I know I want to at least attempt Goofy once in my lifetime, do why not do it while I'm in shape for NYCM? I'll probably go back to just doing half marathons after that, so I'm cramming them together. Running with a team certainly helps. I would never get the long runs in otherwise. I'm looking at a time over 6 hrs for NY, too. *sigh*

I'm torn about the medal, too, but I do like that it's different than their other designs. I didn't really like last year's Donald, but I like this year's. You should definitely go. See you there! We should be at the corrals and do a group photo!!!

    3. Those are my thoughts exactly! Jaime, we must meet up for both!

How could you not like last year's Donald?! It was the epitome of good design in the racing world! Its ok, I'll forgive you as long as you meet me! haha.
